The Norman Giles Papers are comprised of his travel itineraries and diaries as Dr. Giles pursued his passion for visiting countries all over the globe. Throughout his travels Dr. Giles observed native birds. The collection includes some of his early birding journals based on observations in Georgia. Dr. Giles became the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Genetics at the University of Georgia in 1972 where his work led to a greater understanding of how biochemical pathways in microorganisms are regulated.

Photographs portraying World War I training camps and several University of Georgia sites (including College of Agriculture, dance/drama scenes, and Sanford Field). Four letters at the end of the collection are signed "J.M. Sheppard," Athens, Georgia, July 14, 1917. Letters are addressed to "Levy," Dickingson," "Comer," and "Hill"; and regard photographs and seeing the addressed persons in the fall.

Also in the collection are Payne's Department of Microbiology scrapbooks for the years 1953 through 2003. In addition, the collection includes correspondence with colleagues around the world along with numerous photographs and slides. Also included are lecture and conference notes along with documentation of the department's close association with University College in Cardiff, UK.

Photographs, undated, appear to be of family members, but most are unidentified. The letter, undated, Darlington School, Rome, Georgia, addresses "Cher Paul," is signed "Petit," and regards a visit at Terre Rouge and writings that were accepted.
